　わきのドアが開き、ぺこぺこした下級僧がサディの赤い革の箱を持ってはいってきた。狂信者のソーチャクが、やはり勝ち誇った笑いをうかべて、箱をうけとった。「スシス?トールのウッサがわれわれの法を破り、よって、命を剥奪される証拠をごらんください」ソーチャクは甲高い声で言うと、掛け金をはずして箱をあけ、サディのさまざまなガラス瓶と、ジスが住んでいる土焼きの瓶を見せた。
　ウルギットがますますみじめな顔つきになった。かれは不安そうにサディを見ると、期待をこめてたずねた。「こういうものを持っていることについての説明はあるんだろうね？」
　サディはおおげさに無邪気な表情をつくった。「陛下、まさかわたしがここクトル?マーゴスにこれらのものを広めようとしていたとお考えなのではないでしょうね」かれは抗議口調で言った。
「しかしだな」ウルギットはあいまいに言った。「おまえはそういうものを所持しているではないか」
「それはもちろんでございますが、マロリー人向けの商品としてでございます。あの連中のあいだでは、このような品は高く売れるのです」
「それはそうだろうな」ウルギットは椅子のなかで背筋をのばした。「すると、わが国民に薬を売るつもりはなかったと？」
「めっそうもないことでございますよ、陛下」サディは怒ったように答えた。
　ウルギットはほっとした顔になった。「やれやれだ」かれはサディをにらみつけているチャバトに言った。「そういうわけだ。ここにいるニーサの友人がマロリー人を骨ぬきにしようとしている事実については、われわれのだれひとり異議を唱えることはできんはずだ――口だししなければ、それだけ好都合だ」
「これはどうなのです？」ソーチャクがサディの箱を床におろして、土焼きの瓶をもちあげた。「ここにはどんな秘密が隠してあるんだ、スシス?トールのウッサ？」かれは瓶をゆすった。
「気をつけてくださいよ！」サディは叫ぶなり、片手を伸ばして瓶にとびつこうとした。
「ははあ！」チャバトが勝ち誇った声で叫んだ。「その瓶の中には、奴隷商人の大事ななにかがはいっているらしいね。中身を調べさせてもらうよ。まだ発見されていない犯罪がここにひそんでいるやもしれない。瓶をあけよ、ソーチャク」
「お願いです」サディは懇願した。「命を大切になさるなら、その瓶に手を出さないでください」
「いいからあけよ、ソーチャク」チャバトは無情に命令した。
　グロリムはほくそえみながらふたたび瓶をゆすると、コル物業二按ク栓をはずしはじめた。
「後生です、お坊さま！」サディは声をふるわせた。
「見るだけだ」ソーチャクはにやにや笑った。「害はあるまい」かれはコルク栓をぬいて、瓶をもちあげ、片目をあてて中をのぞきこんだ。
　ジスがとっさに攻撃したのは、言うまでもない。
　首をしめられたような悲鳴をあげて、ソーチャクは両腕をふりまわしながら、うしろ向きにのけぞった。そのはずみに土焼きの瓶がソーチャクの手からとびだし、床に落下する寸前にサディが受け止めた。襲われた僧侶は恐怖に顔をゆがめて、両手で目をおおった。と、指のあいだ公屋貸款から血が噴き出した。ソーチャクは手足をけいれんさせて豚のような金切り声をあげはじめた。いきなり前のめりに倒れ、狂ったように顔をたたいて皮膚をかきむしった。次に頭を床に打ちつけはじめた。けいれんはますます激しくなり、口から泡をふきはじめた。甲高い絶叫とともに、かれは突然宙高くとびあがった。落下したとき、ソーチャクは絶命していた。
　肝をつぶしたような静寂が一瞬あたりを支配し、やがてチャバトが黄色い声をはりあげた。「ソーチャク！」その声は苦悩とかけがえのないものを失った不安に満ち雀巢奶粉ていた。彼女は死んだ男のかたわらに駆け寄ると、身をなげかけて身も世もないようにすすり泣いた。  

「お願いだから口答えしないで、タレン。もう決まったことなの。さあ、中へ入りましょう。夕食の準備ができてるのよ。冷めてしまったらおいしくないわ」
　翌日の午《ひる》ごろ、クリクの遺体は農場を見下ろす丘の上の、丈高い楡《にれ》の木の下に埋葬された。午前中はずっと曇っていたが、クリクの息子たちが父親の遺体を丘に運び上げるときには太陽が顔をのぞかせた。スパーホークは従士ほど天候の判断に長《た》けているわけではなかったが、いきなり農場の上にだけ青空が広がって太陽が輝き、デモスの街のほかのところは相変わらず雲に覆われているのを見ると、多少の疑いを抱かないわけにはいかなかった。
　葬儀は簡単だが、感動的なものだった。地元の年老いた司祭はかなり足許が危なっかしかったが、少年時代からクリクを知っていた人物で、悲しみよりもむしろ愛について多くを語った。それが終わると、クリクの長男のカラードがスパーホークの横に並び、一同はそろって丘を下った。カラードが騎士に話しかけた。
「ぼくをパンディオン騎士にって言ってくださったこと、本当に名誉に思ってます、サー?スパーホーク。でも申し訳ないんですけど、辞退させていただきたいんです」
　スパーホークは平凡な顔立ちの痩せた少年に鋭く目を向けた。黒い髭はまだやっと伸びはじめたばかりだ。
「わがままで言ってるんじゃありません。ただ、父には別の考えがあったものですから。シミュラに落ち着かれたら、ぼくもそちらに合流します」
「きみが？」スパーホークは青年のてきぱきした話し方に、わずかに意表を衝かれた。
「そうです、サー?スパーホーク。ぼくは父の仕事を引き継ぎます。代々の伝統ですからね。ぼくの祖父はあなたのお祖父様とお父様にお仕えしていました。父はお父様とあなたにお仕えしました。今度はぼくの番というわけです」
「そんな必要はないんだぞ、カラード。パンディオン騎士になりたくはないのか」
「ぼくの気持ちは関係ありませんよ、サー?スパーホーク。果たすべき仕事があるんですから」


　翌朝、一行は農場をあとにした。カルテンが馬を進めてきて、スパーホークの横に並んだ。
「いい葬儀だったな。葬儀が好きだってことなら。おれはむしろ、友だちにはそばにいてもらったほうがいいけど」
「ちょっと相談に乗ってくれないか」スパーホークが言った。
「殺さなくちゃならんやつは、もうみんな殺したと思ったがな」
「真面目になれないのか」
「ずいぶんな要求だな。まあ努力はするよ。相談てのは何だ」
「カラードがおれの従士になると言ってる」
「それで？　田舎じゃあ、息子が父親の跡を継ぐのは当たり前のことだ」
「カラードはパンディオン騎士にしてやりたい」
「何が問題なのかわからんな。だったら騎士にしてしまえばいいじゃないか」
「従士と騎士を兼任はできんよ」
「どうして。自分のことを考えてみろ。おまえはパンディオン騎士で、王国評議会の議員で、女王の擁護者で、かつ女王の夫じゃないか。カラードはがっしりしたいい肩をしてる。どっちの仕事もこなせるさ」
　考えれば考えるほど、スパーホークはその案が気に入った。
「カルテン、おまえがいなかったら、おれはどうすればいいんだろうな」笑いながらそう言う。
「たぶんじたばたともがくことになるな。おまえは物事を複雑にしすぎるんだ。もっと単純に考えるようにしたほうがいいぞ」
「ありがとう」
「お代はいらんよ」

　雨が降っていた。午後遅い空から霧のように舞い落ちてくる柔らかな銀の雨が、シミュラの街のずんぐりした物見やぐらを包みこんでいる。その街に騎馬の孤影が近づきつつあった。黒く重い旅のマントをまとった男が、大型の毛深い葦毛《あしげ》の馬を駆っている。馬の鼻面は長く、無表情な目には酷薄な光があった。
「シミュラに戻るときはいつも雨だな、ファラン」騎乗する男が馬に声をかけた。
　ファランがぴくりと耳を動かす。
　スパーホークはその日の朝、仲間たちをあとに残して独り先行してきたのだった。理由はわかりきっていたので、反対する者はいなかった。
「よろしければ一足先に王宮にお知らせしておきますが、スパーホーク殿下」東門の衛兵の一人がそう申し出た。エラナは夫の新しい称号を周知徹底させているらしい。そうなってなければいいと思っていたのだが。慣れるまでにはしばらく時間がかかりそうだった。
「ありがとう、ネイバー。だがここは妻をび。まだそういうことを喜ぶような歳だからな」
　衛兵は笑顔を見せた。
「詰所に戻っていたまえ。こんな天気だ、風邪を引くぞ」
　スパーホークはシミュラの街に馬を乗り入れた。雨のせいで人通りは少なく、ファランの鋼鉄を打った蹄《ひづめ》は、ほとんど無人の街路に虚ろな音を響かせた。
　スパーホークは王宮の中庭に馬を止め、手綱を厩番に手渡した。
「性格の悪い馬だから、気をつけたほうがいい。よかったら飼葉と雑穀をやって、身体をこすってやってくれ。少しばかり無理をさせたものだから」
「かしこまりました、スパーホーク殿下」まただ。スパーホークはこの件で妻と話し合おうと心に決めた。
「ファラン、いい子にしてろよ」
　大柄な馬は騎士に冷たく刺々《とげとげ》しい視線を向けた。
「いい旅だったぞ。ゆっくり休め」スパーホークは片手をファランの力強い首に置いた。それからふり向いて王宮の階段を上り、「女王はどこに？」と門番の一人に尋ねた。
「評議会室だと思います、閣下」
